PalestineConnect has worked in the field of refugee youth education and IT in the Gaza Strip since being established in 1999. It operates community-led computer-aided learning centres in three of the most disadvantaged refugee camps in the Gaza Strip (Rafah, Bureij, and Maghazi). For the best part of a decade now, these centres, run by local staff and volunteers, have been delivering structured training as well as supervised recreational access to IT facilities and learning resources to refugee boys and girls aged between 10 and 18.
The IT-related courses are designed to support children in their education as well as enriching their social worlds and alleviating, in a small way, the strains of the already-overburdened families and UNRWA services. In the current environment we strongly feel our services are needed more than ever and PalestineConnect has a proven track record of delivering these in an effective and egalitarian manner.
We used to operate as "Enlighten", but in recent years the trustees in both Gaza and the UK felt that the name, in of itself, did not let people know what we did as charity. The new name (and logo) are therefore an attempt encapsulate what we do and why we set ourselves up as a charity in the first place. Our area of operation is the Occupied Palestinian Territories - Palestine - and a founding aim was, and still is, to enable Palestinian children throughout the Diaspora to communicate and engage with one another by way of the internet - Connect.
