PalestineConnect is a small grassroots charity that operates community-led centres in the Gaza Strip. These computer-aided learning centres provide disadvantaged Palestinian children and young adults with a safe and relaxed environment in which to undertake a range of IT-related courses – that compliment the UNRWA schooling system and are vocationally relevant. All centres have disabled access and facilities and offer services to children irrespective of (dis)ability and gender.
Since its establishment, PalestineConnect's local staff have prioritised forging and maintaining strong relationships with local educational services and community organisations. In particular, UNRWA schools are closely consulted on training and scheduling, as well as in developing needs assessments. Strong community links, gender inclusivity, and grassroots staffing are integral to the charity’s ethos and ensure that throughout periods of political turmoil and anxiety in Gaza, the charity has remained a widely-trusted service, valued and respected by all elements of the communities it works with.
It is fundamental to PalestineConnect’s mission that all its services be offered absolutely free of charge in order that the most needy be encouraged to benefit. Although there have been, and continue to be, opportunities for youth to access some forms of IT equipment in each of the camps (e.g., internet cafes or games clubs), there is no equivalent service offering free, non-partisan, supervised access – still less, combining this with a tried and tested pedagogic structure.
The IT-related courses are designed to support children in their education as well as enriching their social worlds and alleviating, in a small way, the strains of the already-overburdened families and UNRWA services. In the current environment we strongly feel our services are needed more than ever and PalestineConnect has a proven track record of delivering these in an effective and egalitarian manner.
